Ulta is the bed, bath and BEYOND of all things beauty which makes sense that they have trademarked 'All Things Beauty, All in One Place.'
Ulta has differentiated themselves in the beauty industry because they offer high-end prestigious products once only found at department stores as well as more price point friendly 'drugstore' products. The beauty superstore has surpassed Sephora as the largest beauty chain in the country with 978 retail stores across the nation. Ulta carries 20,000 products from 500 different brands in addition to a successful private label and a full-service salon and brow bar.
To many, Ulta is a place to be avoided at all costs unless you:
1. need a specific product
2. need a trip to the brow bar
3. have a decent amount of time to dedicate to being at Ulta
I can see how Ulta can be stressful and I typically feel like I should have bought that other shade of lipstick I was teeter-tottering between for the last twenty minutes, but overall, Ulta is such a therapeutic place for me.
Having a bad day? I'll cheer myself up by going to Ulta.
Had a splendid day? I'll celebrate by going to Ulta.
Similar mentality to having a beer to blow off steam or having a glass of wine to congratulate your hard work, right?
As much as I love the fact that I get to browse from over 100 different shades of Vice Urban Decay lipstick, it is not the main reason I have such a die hard love for Ulta. So what is it then? Their rewards program.

It's the ULTAmate rewards program!!!!!!
Get it? Ulta's Ultimate rewards program
(huge fan of a good pun)
I am not alone in my love for the Ultamate rewards program. As of Jaunary, Ulta has acquired 21.7 million active members using their rewards program which generates 90% of their profit annually. They must be doing something right because 21.7 million active members is a huge deal. According to the 2015 US census, there are 101 million women between the ages of 18-65 in the US. That means 20% of the US female population shops at Ulta and is a member of their rewards program.
20% of the United States female population shops at Ulta and are active members
The program operates on a system of points earned from each dollar you spend at Ulta. Say I spend $50:
- Pay with cash = 50 points
- Pay with the Ulta Master Card = 100 points
- By using the Ulta Master Card you earn double the points on every dollar spent at Ulta
Unlike so many other reward programs where you earn coupons for items you may never want or need, with Ultamate rewards you can apply your earned points to any of their 20,000 products.
Ulta's #1 competitor Sephora also has a rewards program where you earn points from each dollar spent but there are a few key difference.
At Sephora:
- You can only earn samples and not full sized products
- At best you get to choose from three different sample choices
- Your points expire
Another cool thing about the ULTAmate rewards program is that members are allowed to share a single account per household so my mom, sister and myself share an account
= 3x the points = 3x the rewards!!!!
Before Ulta came to Fargo or Bozeman I would buy my make-up wipes, face-wash, razors, nail polish, lotion, ect at Target or CVS but not anymore.
Anything I can buy at Ulta instead of Target / CVS I do because it is just stupid not to get your points when they sell the same product at basically the same price (Ulta is even cheaper sometimes for basic products!!).
Moral of the story, have a bomb ass rewards program and show your customers the love and they will show it right back to ya. ILYSM Ulta <3
